City of Melfort hosting second annual Christmas lights contest and twinkle tour

The City of Melfort is bound to start looking brighter as the second annual Christmas lights contest gets underway.

Over 100 houses had Christmas displays throughout the holidays last year, all vying for one of three prizes.

Recreation programmer Shannon Marshall told northeastNOW the contest is a great way to spread Christmas cheer throughout the community.

“There’s a lot of people who put a lot of work into their light displays so we want to make sure to nominate them and recognize them,” Marshall said. “The other part is so the community can get out and enjoy those displays.”

Through the contest a twinkle tour map is created to include all contest entries.

Registration is now open until Dec. 17 with winners to be announced on Dec. 20.

Displays are judged on quantity, creativity, and colour by members of the Melfort Communities in Bloom committee. There is also a people’s choice category for the community to get involved in.

“People’s choice is a great one because it is interactive for everyone,” Marshall said. “There will be a text number on the night of the twinkle tour and will be on tour sheets.”

Creativity was taken to a higher level last year with some homes getting interactive; such as Santa handing out candy canes or live deer in one yard on the night of the twinkle tour.

Another highlight from last year was snow sculptures that popped up around the city and several on Regent Street on the south side of Melfort.

“Our local woodcarvers made the sculptures, and it was one of our most favourite things last year and we have some great snow in the forecast again,” Marshall said.

The Christmas lights contest is just one way for the community to get into the Christmas spirit this year. There will be a Christmas village at the Melfort Museum in conjunction with the Christmas Castle, as well as a light display at the Melfort campgrounds.

The twinkle tour is tentatively set for Dec. 17.

Nominations can be made by sending an email with an address that is beautifully decorated to pool@melfort.ca or call 306-752-7200.
