A gas tank leak forces high school shop students to evacuate

A safety precaution forced Melfort & Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC) students to evacuate early Wednesday morning.

Shop students were evacuated from the building at 10 a.m. after reports of a gas tank leak.

The faculty took the necessary precautions after discovering the leak, according to Don Rempel, director of education for the North East School Division.

“Earlier today an acetylene tank was found to be hissing. To be extra careful we evacuated the students from the lab and we called 911,” Rempel said.

An assessment and resolution were handled by the Melfort Fire Department after they were dispatched to the high school.

“They inspected the tank and removed it from the building and gave us the all-clear,” he added.

The issue was resolved soon after the students were evacuated, and they were allowed to return to class without incident.
