Twin Rivers to hold Prairieland Curling Camp this weekend

Nov 30, 2021 | 6:00 PM

The Twin Rivers Curling Club in North Battleford will be hosting its Viterra Prairieland Curling Camp this Saturday, Dec. 4 in North Battleford.

A CurlSask initiative held around the province, the event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., teaching skills and development in the sport to curlers ages 10-18.

General manager of Twin Rivers, Kathy McNinch said the event is something the club is looking forward to hosting again this year, to help the next generation as they develop their game.

“I think it’s great; there’s going to be 16 kids here from the northwest region and I think they’re all fairly anxious to get back to curling,” she said. “Anybody who’s in this camp has done a little bit of curling before – maybe not a lot, but a little bit – so they know the game and they’re just here to learn a bit more on the skill side.”

The CurlSask youth camps have been held across Saskatchewan for over 30 years, with 2019 marking its first year in the Battlefords.

Originally scheduled to take place in the community four years consecutively, last year’s camp was cancelled altogether due to the pandemic, which also postponed the 2021 camp from summer to early December this year.

Participants will receive a snack, a lunch and a t-shirt, and be placed in groups based on their year of birth and previous curling experience. As per CurlSask’s rules, any participants over the age of 12 will be required to prove vaccination status.

McNinch said just being able to host the youth curling camp again this year bodes well for the future of the game in the community and surrounding region.

“We hope it will grow as it goes as well [for years to come], that these kids who enjoy it will bring in a friend here and there,” she said. “Curling is a very social game, so if they do that we’ll just continue to grow as a club as well.”
