Stars fall 2-1 to Hounds in return home

Dec 4, 2021 | 11:15 PM

The Battlefords North Stars fell 2-1 to the division-rival Notre Dame Hounds Saturday in North Battleford.

Despite firing 50 shots on goal – including 18 in the first period alone – the team was unable to break through more than once against goalie Ryley Osland, who stopped 49 of 50 Battlefords’ shots on the night, to lead his team to victory.

North Stars goalie, Lowen Kenyon also had a strong showing in the losing effort, still making 27 saves on 29 Hounds’ shots in what was a tight game throughout the night.

Following a scoreless opening period, Hounds defenceman, Sam Kroon opened the scoring for Notre Dame just 1:18 into the second period, on his third of the season, coming on a quick shot off a cross-seem play to make it 1-0 for the visitors.

Emmett Wurst answered back with his eighth of the season to make it 1-1, scoring the lone Battlefords’ goal on a nice three-way passing play by the Stars.

After Ethan Scriven chipped the puck into the corner for Brad Blake to chase, Blake then one-touched a deft pass in front for the shot and goal by Wurst.

Notre Dame captain, Kevin Anderson then scored the winner in the third period on a two-on-one for his first of December and 13th of the campaign, after scoring 10 in November alone.

The loss was the Stars first in regulation in nine games, as the team is now 17-7-3 on the year. Notre Dame meanwhile, improve to 13-9-3.

The North Stars will return to action Tuesday night in La Ronge. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
