North Stars fall to Mustangs in OT

Dec 11, 2021 | 12:01 AM

For the fourth time in their last four games, the Battlefords North Stars found themselves on the wrong side of a one-goal contest, as the team fell 3-2 in OT to Melfort, Friday night in North Battleford.

Michael Harroch kept the team in the game throughout the night, stopping 41 of 44 shots against on the evening, including 19 in the first period alone, as the Mustangs outshot the Stars 19-6 in the first period, and 36-14 through 40 minutes of play.

Despite the shot discrepancy however, Harroch kept the game scoreless until just over six minutes into the second, when Melfort opened the scoring on a power play, on Curtis Hammond’s 14th of the year.

Emmett Wurst tied the game for the Stars with his ninth later in the frame, scoring on a Battlefords man-advantage as well, to make it 1-1 after two periods.

Just 21 seconds into the third, Nolan Doell’s 20th on a breakaway to open the frame made it 2-1 Mustangs, where it remained into the final 2:07 of regulation.

Then, off a net mouth scramble, Holden Doell cashed in for his fifth of the season late, scoring to tie the hockey game and force OT for his team.

In overtime, Mustangs’ captain, Ben Tkachuk’s ninth on the power play, came on a quick shot from the point, to serve as the game-winner at 3-2 Mustangs in O.T.

With the loss, the Stars have now dropped four in a row, with three of those losses coming in overtime.

Despite the defeat through, the team tie third-place Flin Flon in the standings with their one point earned for the overtime loss, and now sit 17-7-5 on the year.

The Stars will now look to rebound quickly, as the team is back in action Saturday night in Nipawin against the Hawks. Saturday’s game will be available on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7 p.m., with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
