Battle over first sees Broncos dominate at home over Bruins

By the end of Saturday’s Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action at the Elgar Petersen Arena, one team would skate away with 48 points and first in the league.

Thanks to a stellar performance from goalie Rayce Ramsay and the green and gold, it would be the Humboldt Broncos with a 4-1 win over the former first-place Estevan Bruins as they will work to hang on to the top spot for the rest of the season.

Ramsay would stop 39 out of 40 shots the Bruins would fire his way for what Broncos head coach Scott Barney is calling his best performance of the season.

“To say that, he’s been outstanding every game but I just think he was at a different level last night, made some huge saves for us and gave us some big momentum to capitalize on opportunities,” Barney told northeastNOW.

Ramsay is at the top of the SJHL stats in a couple of different areas. With 1,721 minutes in goal this season, the Saskatoon native has 376 minutes more than the next leading goalie, Boston Bilous for the Bruins, as well as the most wins to his name at 23 out of 29 games so far this season.

With a current save percentage of 0.925, Ramsay is third in the league following Bilous with 0.935 and Battlefords Michael Harroch with 0.929.

In order to stay at the top as the Broncos tackle the last half of the SJHL season, Barney said they will need to be consistent and play for those full 60 minutes. Last night was a strong showing for the players and beating, in Barney’s opinion, the best team in the league is a huge confidence boost that they will carry with them until the playoffs.

“They’re hosting a cup and that’s what they’re gunning towards. Anytime you can be the club like that it gives all the players confidence and helps us against every other club here in the league.”

Bronco Conner McGrath would be the only one to light up the net in the first with help from Matthew Perkins and Noah Barlage to send the green and gold into the second up by one.

Alec Saretzky would get his 20th of the season midway through the second with help from Perkins and Lucas Ceccarelli. However the Bruins would answer back less than a minute later with a goal from Eric Pearce on the Bruins power play to add some excitement as the teams finished off the second at 2-1 for the Broncos.

It would be a long third-period fight with Estevan unable to find the equalizers, even after pulling Bilous at 17:44, 18:31 and 19:02 left in the game to try and capitalize on the man advantage. In the end, it would be the Broncos reaping the rewards with two empty-net goals; one from Ethan Zielke for his fourth of the season with help from Alex Morozoff with just a 1:30 left to play, the other from Nicksha Eric unassisted for his third of the season with less than a minute left in the game.

The Broncos earned two valuable points in the standings with those 48 points in the league with Estevan still following close behind with 46. Flin Flon is currently third in the standings with 41 points followed by the Battlefords and Melfort tied for fourth with 39.

SJHL action will continue at the EPA this coming week with the Klippers and the North Stars flying in on Tuesday and Saturday respectively, and the Broncos heading on the road to Notre Dame on Friday.
