North Stars drop more over the weekend

A stretch of tight, tough losses continued for the Battlefords North Stars over the weekend.

Following a 3-2 overtime loss on Friday to the Melfort Mustangs, the Stars headed to Nipawin, where they were on the wrong side of a 4-1 contest. This was the Stars fifth straight defeat.

The Hawks capitalized less than 10 minutes into the game, thanks to right-winger Jake Smith, and lead 2-0 after 20 minutes. After Brody Wilson extended Nipawin’s lead to 3-0, the Stars go on the board a minute later thanks to a Matthew Henry tally, assisted by Dylan Esau and Steve Kesslering. While they managed to keep pace on shots totals the rest of the way, the Stars were unable to capitalize on any scoring chances and the Hawks added an empty netter.

Michael Harroch made 25 saves between the pipes in the loss, dropping his record to 8-2-2-1, while Esau and Kesslering both have 26 points on the year.

The North Stars now sit fourth in the SJHL standings, tied with Melfort with 39 points, but having played less games. There’s three games remaining to make up ground on the front runners before the holidays, starting Tuesday at the Access Communications Centre when they host the Notre Dame Hounds.

Following that tilt, the Stars play Kindersley at home on Friday, before travelling to Humboldt to play the top-seeded Broncos. Pregame on CJNB begins at 7 p.m., with puck drop shortly after 7:30 p.m.
