Year in Review: Top 2021 stories in Meadow Lake (Pt. 1)

During the Christmas season, our team at Pattison Media is once again producing positive stories based around holiday traditions and accomplishments for the region.

Coming off of the COVID shutdown, meadowlakeNOW counts down some of the top stories from the past year in the Meadow Lake region.

#10 — Meadow Lake Mall to be renovated under new ownership

The Meadow Lake Mall was purchased by Endurance Equities Corporation this year with the intention of changing the appearance of the shopping centre.

Ownership stated the opportunity to expand into the market was a key factor and current business owners have expressed their excitement for the new vision of the facility.

#9 — Meadow Lake teacher recognized for impact on Indigenous students

Derek Eftoda, an educator at Carpenter High School, was awarded the Guiding the Journey Award for his work with Indigenous youth. The honour is awarded by Indspire, a national Indigenous Charity investing in First Nations, Inuit, and Métis education, to those who make significant contributions to community-based accomplishment.

Eftoda said he was shocked by the announcement, while MP Gary Vidal highlighted the honour in the House of Commons. Read more here.

#8 — NHL champion Dwight King opens Meadow Lake virtual golf facility

Meadow Lake’s Dwight King, a Stanley Cup champion with the Los Angeles Kings, recently opened Kingdom Golf in the city. It’s a virtual golf facility, allowing golfers to keep their game sharp during the winter months.

King said he had always planned on coming home to raise his family after his career and wanted to start a business to help the community. Read more here.

#7 — Flying Dust signs significant power agreement

In November, Flying Dust First Nation (FDFN) signed a $30 million investment for the Kopahawakenum Flare to Power Facility, a 15-megawatt flare gas-to-power facility expected to open in 2023.

SaskPower and Genalta Power are also involved with FDFN in the 20-year Power Purchase Agreement, which is expected to create around 50 jobs during construction and 20 into operation.

It’s designed to generate power for approximately 9,000 Saskatchewan Homes and reduce emissions. Read more here.

#6 — Okema Clothing, 22Fresh collaborate for Truth and Reconciliation Day

Ahead of Truth and Reconciliation Day, just recognized in Saskatchewan this year, local company Okema Clothing partnered with 22Fresh Apparel to create T-shirts for raising awareness around the impact residential schools have had on Indigenous people and communities.

All proceeds were donated to local organizations offering support and relief to Indigenous veterans and residential school survivors. Read more here.
