Hard work ‘pays off’ in Stars win over Millionaires

Jan 8, 2022 | 1:11 AM

The Battlefords North Stars continued their hot start to 2022, topping the Melville Millionaires 4-3 in North Battleford, Friday night.

Forward, Keiton Klein lead the way with a pair of goals, while Tynan Ewart and Zane Florence also picked up a goal apiece in the win and goalie, Lowen Kenyon topped 30 of 33 shots against.

Klein’s first of the night opened the scoring for the team just 1:12 into the first period, on a bullet wrist shot from the slot to make it 1-0 Stars early, on his second of the year.

It also gave the team a lead they would continue to hold the entirety of the remaining 58:48 of the night’s contest.

Ewart’s third of the season made it 2-0 Stars, on a laser from the left circle set up by a slick cross-seem pass from Evan Waldie, before Florence added his 10th of the year as well just a minute later, to end the first, 3-0 Battlefords.

In the second, Klein again scored just 1:12 into the frame, to make it 4-0, converting on a Jake Southgate rebound in front, to stretch the lead out further.

However, despite the deficit, Melville battled back as the game went along, as Nicolas Samson scored a pair of goals and set up another to get his team back to within one over the back-half of the night’s contest. Though ultimately that is as close as the Millionaires would come; 4-3 North Stars, the final.

With the win, the Stars improve to 21-9-5 on the season and move into fourth overall in the league standings with 47 points. The team will now look to stretch their winning streak to three games, as they travel to Humboldt to play the division-rival and league-leading Broncos Saturday.
