Saskatchewan cold snap to end Monday

For more than two weeks, most days have been extremely cold in Saskatchewan.

But relief is finally coming.

Environment Canada is forecasting a stretch of relatively warm weather to start the week. It’s still fairly cold Sunday, with many spots seeing windchills between -30 C and -40 C.

However, according to meteorologist Robyn Dyck, things will turn around Monday.

She’s predicting a high of -13 C in Regina and the south and -14 C in Saskatoon and central Saskatchewan.

“We do have, on the west coast, a system that’s been developing over the last few days. There’s been a warm front draped along the Rocky Mountains in Alberta there. It’s been allowed to sit there, accumulating with lots of warm air on the rocks … That comes across the northern prairies Tuesday and into Wednesday,” she said.

The warm air will bring much higher temperatures.

In Regina, the high temperature for Tuesday is 2 C, while it’s 5 C on Wednesday. In Saskatoon, the high temperature for Tuesday is 0 C, while it’s 1 C on Wednesday.

Later in the week, things will cool down a bit, but most highs won’t even drop below the -15 C mark on Friday, the coolest day currently in the forecast.

Dyck said she can’t wait for the warmup.

“Get outside, that’s what I want to do. It’s been very, very cold and it sucks being inside,” she said with a giggle.
