Stanley Mission reacts to increase in active COVID cases

Stanley Mission is responding to the spread of the Omicron variant in the northern community.

According to a Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) COVID-19 update released Jan. 7, there were 16 active cases in Stanley Mission. There has been a total of 505 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Stanley Mission has a population of approximately 2,000 people.

As of Jan. 10, Keethanow Elementary School and Rhoda Hardlotte Memorial Keethanow High School will be moving to online education for a minimum of two weeks. If students from either school require a laptop, they are encouraged to call staff at the schools to make arrangements.

Effective Jan. 8, the community arena has also been shut down and all recreation activities have been suspended until further notice. An update regarding the scheduled snowmobile poker rally for Jan. 29 is expected to be provided soon.

Provincial court in Stanley Mission on Tuesday will also be altered with docket matters being conducted via telephone. Trials and preliminary hearings will go ahead unless otherwise adjourned by a judge.

COVID purchase orders will also be given out at the band hall on Tuesday at 1 p.m. All on-reserve and Northern Settlement of Stanley Mission band members are eligible.

As of Jan. 5, 94 per cent of Stanley Mission residents 12 and over had received a first shot of a COVID vaccine with 89 per cent going back for a second.

So far, the LLRIB has reported 1,294 COVID cases with 1,263 recoveries and five deaths. Currently, there’s an additional four cases on-reserve in La Ronge and one in Sucker River.
