A man charged in connection to a gang related incident in Prince Albert last summer, where the victim was robbed and threatened with bear spray, has received a one year jail sentence.

Lauder Bear, 22, appeared in person Tuesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court, and entered a guilty plea to robbery. He has been in custody since the incident on July 31, 2021.

According to the statement of facts read in court, a man standing outside a residence in the 1000 block of 18th St. W., was approached by three men, who were all yelling “Terror Squad.”

After questioning the victim why he was wearing red clothing, Bear proceeded to steal a silver chain the man was wearing around his neck.

Although one of the other suspects was carrying bear mace, he did not use it and the victim was not physically hurt.

Police were called soon after, and located Bear hiding in a crawl space at a nearby residence. He was wearing five chains including the one that was recently stolen. Another of the suspects, Dallas Fulton, was also located at the residence.

With time spent in remand, Bear has roughly 117 days left to serve. Following his release from custody, he will then be on probation for a period of 18 months.

Bear’s lawyer told the court he acknowledges he was hanging out with people he should not have been, and upon his release from custody, plans to return to his community of Shoal Lake, where he feels he can get good support and get a fresh start. He also plans to finish his high school education.

Judge B. Mitchell accepted the joint submission presented to him by the two lawyers.

“Clearly this was a very serious incident and very frightening for the victim,” he said.

Meanwhile Fulton, the man alleged to have been carrying the bear spray, was scheduled to appear for trial Tuesday, but failed to show up. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest. Fulton has been out on bail since August, 2021.

In addition to the robbery, he also has outstanding charges related to a violent incident in the city last October.

Police were called to a residence in the 800 block of 15th St. W. A woman was treated for non-life threatening stab wounds to her cheek and thigh and one man was treated for a stab wound to his neck.

For this incident Fulton was charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault, uttering threats and unlawful confinement.
