Music lessons a hit at Alex Robertson Public Library

Jan 14, 2022 | 12:30 PM

Music lessons are being offered by programmer Riley Burr at La Ronge’s Alex Robertson Public Library.

Ukulele and guitar lessons both started this week with ukulele lessons being offered Tuesday and guitar lessons occurring on Thursday. Lessons will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and the public can sign up for a 45-minute spot for a private lesson or with a friend.

Ukulele lesson are being offered to those nine years or older and guitar lessons are for people ages 12 and up.

“There were a few cancellations with COVID concerns, but for the most part, we’re keeping our schedule,” library administrator Sean Stares said.

The public must register for the lessons, but instruments are available for those who need one. Stares explained guitar lessons have proven to be particularly popular and there is a waiting list, so they are considering offering guitar lessons on a second day during the week.

Those who participate do need to follow certain rules like sanitizing their hands when they enter the facility and signing in for public health reasons. Social distancing will also occur at all times and attendees must wear a mask.

“The library is kind of like the living room of the community,” Stares said. “We offer things that don’t necessarily go with libraries like computers. We have video games and board games here. We’re diversified. We want to offer a bit of everything. We have a partnership with the arts council, so we have a artist’s maker space. We tend to be a lot of different things and that’s what libraries are all about.”

Stares noted once the lessons are run for a while, programming will change and could focus on an instrument such as bass. He added part of Burr’s job is responding to what the public wants and offering the programming that is desired.

Those interested in signing up for lessons can contact the library at 1-306-425-2160. Participants aren’t required to have any previous experience.
