Northlands College appoints members to Elders advisory council

Northlands College has announced the first members of the newly established Elders advisory council.

According to media release issued Monday, the members of the council are Ann Lafleur of Beauval, Thompson McKenzie of Grandmother’s Bay, William Morin of Pelican Narrows, Henry Charles of Montreal Lake and Freddie Throassie of Black Lake.

“As a board, we are looking forward to the community feedback and recommendations of the Elders,” said Northlands chairperson Victor Fern. “The guidance and teachings of the Elders will benefit our continued commitment to reconciliation in northern Saskatchewan.”

There was an immense interest in the new advisory council, which the college believe’s confirmed that the citizens of northern Saskatchewan are interested in being part of the institution and the continued work around Indigenization.

The council will provide guidance and knowledge to the institution in the areas of language and culture. Members will also work closely with the board of directors and the office of Indigenous Initiatives to reinforce the college’s vision, mission and outcomes.
