Hawks host high-flying Bruins

The Nipawin Hawks will be put to the test Tuesday when the Centennial Cup hosting Estevan Bruins come to town.

Nipawin is coming into the meeting after a spirited 4-1 win over the Melville Millionaires on Saturday, but Tuesday’s task will be tougher. Estevan sits second overall in the Saskatchewan Junior League standings and have grounded the Hawks in both games between the clubs this season by a combined score of 10 to one. Nipawin netminder Harmon Laser-Hume is coming off his best game as a Hawk and is the reigning SJHL Rookie of the Week. The 18-year-old said he will have the same mindset going into Tuesday’s start between the pipes.

“I am going to go in with the same attitude, one shot at a time,” Laser-Hume said. “Don’t overthink it and just play my game.”

The Bruins haven’t played since Jan. 5 when they edged the Kindersley Klippers 1-0. The team will start a road trip fresh off a break due to COVID. The Bruins will be in Melfort Wednesday to face the Mustangs. Nipawin forward Ethan Tinevez scored his first career SJHL goal in Saturday’s win. He said the team said they need to bring the same effort against the Bruins.

“We’re just going to stick to the game plan and do the little things right. We need to stick with that, and we will see what happens,” Tinevez said.

Laser-Hume is expected to get his second straight start in goal. Trade deadline acquisition Bryden Kiesman will make his Nipawin debut.

The game was originally scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., but due to road conditions the start time has been pushed to 8 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
