Skate Battlefords looking forward to competition season ahead

As the January calendar nears its end, figure skaters at Skate Battlefords are gearing up for the start of competition season.

Competitions will begin next week when high test skaters head to Meadow Lake, Jan. 31 for a virtual test day. Judges will be able to tune in via livestream to adjudicate their performances.

Regional competition will follow soon after, Feb. 12-13 in Kindersley, with the provincial Winter Classic competition just a matter of weeks later, March 4-6 in Estevan.

Skate Battlefords coach, Cindy Tymoruski, said with about 95 percent of their skaters from the STARSkate level regionals bound, and about 75 percent also poised to attend the Winter Classic provincial competition, it’s been great just to see the events return after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

“Everybody’s very much looking forward to it,” Tymoruski said. “The regular competitions have gone forward, and at this point they are very much a go, so we’re really looking forward to being able to participate with those, following the guidelines of course. It’s nice to have something like that to look forward to.”

Following the competitions, Skate Battlefords will then hold their year-end showcase at the end of March, which will draw the winter season to a close.

The showcase serves each year as a chance for skaters from all age groups to perform for family and supporters and show what they have learned throughout the year. Taking place at North Battleford’s Access Communications Centre Mar. 27, Tymoruski said they hope to see a strong turnout in attendance when the time comes.

“It’s a local event we would sure like to have people from around the community and surrounding area come to watch,” she said. “That’s important for us, and is a chance to highlight all our skaters right from CanSkate to our high level skaters and their work throughout the year.”

After the conclusion of the winter season, spring school will run over the Easter break beginning April 16. This gives skaters who wish to continue their training a chance to finish up testing, or learn some new things in preparation for next year or summer camp.

Summer camp will begin sometime in mid-July and end prior to the start of the new fall/winter season, which generally starts in mid-to-late August.
