Broncos extend winning streak in home win against Terriers

The Humboldt Broncos are working to finish January off with a bang as they faced Kael Depape and the Yorkton Terriers Friday night at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA) to extend their lead to five straight wins.

While the Terriers would strike first, the Broncos, sporting their vintage jerseys in homage to the original 1970/71 team, would be the only ones lighting up the score clock for the rest of the games.

Cage Newans would tie it up to finish off the first period followed by Connor McGrath and Alex Morozoff finding the back of the net in the second for a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

An unassisted goal from Braiden Koran would wrap up the scoring with the Broncos taking the W with a 4-1 win.

Battling against Depape’s 0.924 save percentage, Jerzy Orchard, who picked up two assists at the EPA on Friday and his first SJHL goal on Tuesday against Notre Dame, told northeastNOW, they had some skill funneling pucks to the net.

“We got a pretty skilled forward line and our D chip in too, I mean I think we stuck to our game plan and you know it worked out tonight.”

William Dyke would take the win in net in his sixth SJHL game with the Humboldt Broncos.

The rookie goaltender told northeastNOW Friday’s win was the best the team has played since Christmas with consistency being a challenge for the green and gold.

Looking ahead to playoffs they will be keeping an eye on Estevan, Flin Flon, Battleford, and Melfort to pick up patterns and structure as the regular season draws to a close.

With Kindersley, Melville, and Nipawin battling for the last playoff spot, those are all teams that the Broncos will be facing in their last 13 games of the season. Those teams are going to be hungry, said Dyke.

Head coach Scott Barney they have to be ready every game and every shift.

“There’s 12 great teams in this league and you can’t take anyone lightly.”

The green and gold will be facing the Weyburn Red Wings tonight at the EPA as they try to extend their winning streak once again. The Red Wings are 2-8-0-0 in their last 10 games and are currently 12th in the SJHL.
