Winter storm leads to several road closures and school cancellations

The winter storm moving through Saskatchewan has prompted the Prince Albert Catholic School Division (PACSD) to move to remote learning for Tuesday, February 1.

A note sent to PACSD parents Monday evening said the safety of students and staff is their priority. The decision was made “because of the extreme weather and road conditions.” The note went on to say, “We made this decision now to give families as much notice as possible. Our concern is for the ability of students and staff to get to school safely based on current conditions and the forecast.”

Staff will be available to students via Edsby throughout the school day to the best of their ability.

By the time of publication, Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division had not announced whether their schools would be closed Tuesday, but the division’s website did show all buses were cancelled for Feb. 1 due to unsafe road conditions.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency issued a critical alert Monday evening advising motorists not to travel and for those stranded on the highways to stay in their vehicles and call 9-1-1. Several Saskatchewan highways were closed as a result of the storm.
