City planning Wintertainment fun in February

Feb 2, 2022 | 5:25 PM

Families will have plenty to do later this month when the City of North Battleford holds its Wintertainment event, running February 19 to 24.

Leah Garven, one of the city’s Parks and Recreation team members on the project, said some of the highlights include a workshop to create frozen lanterns.

“Wintertainment is something we look forward to every year…,” she said. “It’s a great chance to present some programs that are intended to engage the whole family.”

COVID-19 protocols will be in place throughout the event.

The week begins Feb. 19 with the launch of the new aquatic inflatable at the Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

“You can sit on it, or bounce on it,” Garven said. “It looks like a little bit of an obstacle course.”

On Feb. 21 Family Day both the NationsWEST Field House and Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre will be open during regular hours. There will also be inflatables fun on the turf at the Field House from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Regular admission will apply.

On Feb. 22, free Public Skating (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Shinny (1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) is planned at the Don Ross Arena.

Then, an Ice Lantern Making workshop is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the NationsWEST Field House, also at no cost. Pre-Registration is required by calling 306-445-1760 or emailing: galleriesofnb@cityofnb.ca. People can also register online here. There will also be an outside component so people will need to bundle up.

The ice lanterns will be made with a variety of natural and unique items, such as orange slices, cranberries and pine or spruce branches, for example.

“This is a cheap way of making things; I think if we can get a bunch made it would be really cool looking out on [the CUplex’s] Rotary Plaza,” Garven said.

On Feb. 23, a range of activities are planned. Families can enjoy Public Skating and Shinny at the Don Ross Arena. Then, at the Don Ross Community Centre Craft Room, there will be a Paw Print Art project and a Beaded Daisy Chains Making workshop. Then, at the NationsWEST Field House, part 2 of the Light The Ice Lanterns project is planned in the evening.

On Feb. 24, at the Don Ross Community Centre Craft Room, a Sundog Painting project using watercolour and silhouettes is on the agenda, as well as a Polar Landscape project with watercolour and ink. Pre-Registration required is required for these free events.

The city thanks the many service clubs for sponsoring the public skating programs on offer during the week.

More details about all the events are available on the city’s website here.
