Mustangs set for important western road swing against Stars and Klippers

Feb 3, 2022 | 4:09 PM

The Melfort Mustangs head into an important road trip as the winner of back-to-back games.

The Mustangs defeated Notre Dame and Nipawin to end January on a high note and have been off since as they prepare for their final western road swing of the season.

It all starts Friday, Feb. 4 as they take on the Battlefords North Stars, a team the Mustangs are battling with for playoff positioning.

“Going into this game we’ve got to keep our heads cool and just play our way,” said Mustang defenceman Mark Snarr.

Melfort is currently 25-13-2-4 on the season, good for 56 points. Battlefords is at 24-10-4-1, good for 53 points, but they do hold five games in hand on the Mustangs.

Head-to-Head this season, Battlefords has won two out of three meetings against the Mustangs, both in Melfort. The Mustangs won their last meeting on the road by a 3-2 score in overtime.

Saturday night will feature the Mustangs visiting the Kindersley Klippers for the second time this season. It’ll also be a special night for Snarr as he returns to Kindersley for the first time since he was traded to Melfort back in November. Melfort did play Kindersley back in December but Snarr was injured and did not play.

Snarr said while he’s got friends on the other side, they won’t be friends on the ice, and a Mustang win would be special.

“Oh, it would feel amazing,” he said. “It would be the best feeling ever.”

Kindersley is currently one point out of the playoffs and sit with a 18-23-1-1 record on the season good for 38 points. They haven’t played since Jan. 26 due to a COVID-19 pause for the team.

Both games this weekend can be heard on 105 CJVR with Mat Barrett providing the play-by-play. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m. both nights.
