Humboldt humbles Hawks

The Nipawin Hawks were blanked 7-0 Saturday in Humboldt against the Broncos.

Unlike the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams’ effort on Wednesday in a 7-2 loss, head coach Tad Kozun believes the players left a lot on the ice against Humboldt.

“It’s starting to get pretty frustrating,” he huffed on the postgame show. “When we want to play Hawks hockey, we can play with anyone. When we don’t, this is what happens.”

Coming into the game 32 points behind Humboldt in the standings, the Hawks were confident they could stick with the Broncos, especially after taking them to a shootout back on Nov. 20 at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

The teams traded chances early, but penalty problems put the Hawks in a hole. Connor McGrath and Alex Morozoff each scored power play goals in the opening period to give Humboldt a 2-0 lead after one period.

Braiden Koran, Alec Saretsky, and McGrath added to the onslaught in the second period, Ethan Zielke and Rhett Gibson capped the scoring in the third period.

Kozun said the season for the Hawks has had its ups and downs as well as adversity, but those can’t be used to let the team off the hook.

“It’s been a tough year off the ice with everything we’ve had to deal with. It hasn’t been easy. I think guys are starting to get tired but it’s not an excuse,” he said.

McGrath and Morozoff each led the offensive attack with three points.

Harmon Laser-Hume allowed all seven goals on 43 Humboldt shots, while Rayce Ramsay stopped 23 shots for his third shutout of the SJHL season and 32nd win. The most in the league since 2001-02 when Nipawin’s Shaun Lee had the same number for the Hawks.

Nipawin’s power play didn’t score in six chances, the Broncos capitalized on three of five opportunities.

The Hawks will host Melville on Sunday to close a four-game week that started with a 5-0 win on Tuesday in Weyburn. Kozun said with five days off after the Millionaires game the team can’t end the week without a victory.

“It’s a big game tomorrow where we don’t play again until Friday night,” Kozun explained. “It would be nice to have a win and then get back to work for the week. We haven’t been to the ‘Cage’ for a while, we have a lot of home games coming up and we’re excited to get back in front of our fans.”
