The Nipawin Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak Sunday with a 4-3 shootout win over the Yorkton Terriers.

Looking to build off a strong effort against the Broncos on Friday despite a 2-1 loss, Nipawin felt a similar effort against the Terriers would earn the team their first win since Feb. 1 in Weyburn.

After Yorkton opened the scoring not even two minutes into the game, the Hawks clawed back to tie the game 1-1 courtesy of Alex Johnson’s seventh goal of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. The Terriers restored their lead with a power play goal, but Braxton Buckberger also scored his seventh goal tying the game again before the first intermission.

Nipawin captain Cole Beamin put the Hawks ahead early in the second period with his fourth goal, but the Terriers would bite back tying the game in the third period with just under two minutes to play in regulation.

Christian Albertson and Bryden Kiesman scored in the shootout for Nipawin after the overtime period was scoreless. Chase Hamm allowed just one Yorkton shooter to score in three attempts securing Nipawin’s 15th win of the year. Buckberger said the win felt great for the club.

“It’s definitely good to get a win here,” he said after the game. “We had a really good game Friday against Humboldt, and the guys just carried our momentum into this game. We did go down early but we battled back and held the lead for most of the game. They got one at the end it was nice to get this one in a shootout and get the win.”

The rookie forward from Saskatoon hit the scoresheet for the first time in 16 games. The 18-year-old said scoring again was good for his confidence.

“It’s been a while, I can’t even (think) how many games it’s been, it’s been a long time. It definitely feels good to get one,” Buckberger said.

Hamm picked up his 12th victory of the season in the Nipawin net making 30 saves through 65 minutes of play and the two of three Yorkton shooters in the shootout. The third goal was a misplay by the 19-year-old goaltender, but Buckberger was quick to defend Hamm after the win.

“Chase stood on his head today,” he said. “He made some really great saves for us. They had a lot of odd man rushes that he bailed us out on, it was great to see.”

The Hawks sit 10 points out of the SJHL playoff race with 10 games to play. Next for Nipawin is a trip to Flin Flon on Tuesday to meet the Bombers. The game will be broadcasted on Saskatchewan’s Beach Radio beginning at 7:15 p.m. Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. from the Whitney Forum.
