P.A. council set to discuss retro pay for CUPE employees, officially approve 2022 budget

Feb 15, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Prince Albert’s council meets this week where they’ll discuss approving retro pay for CUPE employees.

The previous collective bargaining agreement between the city and Local 160 and 882 expired at the end of 2019, however, talks on a new deal were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in personnel.

In November 2021, the two sides met and agreed on 1.75 per cent salary increases for 2020 and 2021. If approved by P.A.’s council, CUPE employees will receive these top-ups through retro pay.

If given the green light, the city and CUPE can start negotiations on a new agreement for 2022.

Budget Approval

P.A.’s council will also look to officially approve this year’s budget.

Talks were finished last week after starting in November.

Currently, the budget is expected to be around $2.6 million less than originally projected.

Once approved, the next step will be deciding on a plan to finalize how the tax rate will impact different properties.

Stop Aggressive Solicitors

Unruly solicitors in Prince Albert could soon be getting a big fine every time they disrupt a business.

Up for debate is updating the Obstructive Solicitation Bylaw which would allow police the ability to fine people $2,000 every time someone causes any business trouble.

The changes have been approved twice already, however, every motion needs three before it becomes official.

Other Items

There are several other topics up for discussion including creating a spray park at Crescent Heights for around $347,000.

A report will also be shared highlighting potential funding the city could get from the federal and provincial governments to help create a new public library.

The meeting will happen on Tuesday instead of Monday due to Valentine’s Day. The meeting is slated to start at 5 p.m.
