Local teams ready for Senior Curling Districts in Wilkie

Feb 15, 2022 | 11:07 AM

High school curling teams from around the area have gathered in Wilkie Tuesday for Senior Curling Districts.

In senior mixed curling, John Paul II Collegiate (JPII) have opened their tournament this morning against the host team from Wilkie’s McLurg High School, while North Battleford Comprehensive High School are just underway shortly after 10 a.m. against Leoville.

“We’re all really excited to be here,” coach of JPII’s senior mixed team, Cherelle Cadrain, said heading into the day. “After not having extra curriculars [last year], it makes you really appreciate this year. As a coach, I’m happy we got to field a team for this.”

The senior mixed gold medal game will begin at 1:30 p.m., as well as the consolation game, where the two teams defeated in the opener will play for a shot at the silver medal against the school that comes up short for gold.

Also in action, the senior boys bracket will feature three teams, as McLurg (Wilkie) and Maymont will play each other for a chance to advance to the gold medal against Spiritwood at 1:30 p.m. The two remaining after the gold medal is rewarded will then play again at 5 p.m., to determine silver and bronze placement.

With just two senior girls teams, the gold medal will be determined between Unity and McLurg (Wilkie) at 5 p.m., with the other team taking silver.

The top two teams from each division will advance to regionals on March 4–5 in Saskatoon.
