Stars look to keep momentum rolling in Weyburn

Feb 16, 2022 | 3:29 PM

Coming off a 1-0 shutout over first-place Estevan, the Battlefords North Stars will look to extend their winning streak to two games Wednesday, just an hour up the road in Weyburn against the Red Wings.

Team outlook

The North Stars enter play 26-13-6 on the season, and with 58 points sit fourth overall in the league standings. Tuesday’s win snapped a four-game slide for the Stars, now eying their second straight to open their current three-game swing.

Weyburn is 12-32-3, and with 27 points sit 12th of the 12 teams in the Saskatchewan league. The team will be hungry to get back on the winning track against a Battlefords’ club they beat 4-3 in overtime the last meeting of the season back on Nov. 27.

Players to watch

A pair of premier rookies lead their teams in scoring heading into play Wednesday, as North Stars winger, Jake Southgate leads the Battlefords with 19 goals and 44 points in 43 games, while Wings’ first-year, Kirk Mullen has seven goals and 20 points in 23 games.

Another name to watch will be Stars’ veteran, Dace Prymak, who will join Southgate and right-wing, Colby Bear on the Stars’ top line in place of Holden Doell, who will miss Wednesday’s contest due to an upper body injury sustained against Estevan.

Dace Prymak has been a Swiss Army Knife for the North Stars this season, playing both center and wing, up and down the lineup. He will return to the top line Wednesday night. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Prynak, who was part of the Ben Hiltz blockbuster in late-2019, played 32 games with the Red Wings the last two years prior to being required by the Stars this season. He has 21 points in 36 games this year.

Special teams

The North Stars do hold an edge on the special teams’ end this season as their power play sits third overall, clicking at just under 23 per cent to Weyburn just under 18 per cent (seventh); though the Wings did score their late tying goal on the power play the last time the teams played to force extra time in their comeback win.

The Stars 78 per cent efficiency on the kill (10th) is also slightly better than the Wings’ 75 per cent, and has been especially strong of late killing off all six Estevan power plays just a night ago.

Goaltending

Following a remarkable 39-save shutout performance on Tuesday, Michael Harroch will get a night off for the team between the pipes. Austin Schwab will get the start Wednesday, looking to build on a 1-1 start with the team this year, along with a 2.88 goals-against average and .892 save percentage.

At the other end, Weyburn is likely to turn to Mitchell Dazza who has started three-straight heading into play, while making an appearance in each of his team’s last six games. In 16 games this year, Dazza is 3-8-2, with a 3.64 goals-against average and .889 save percentage.
