Shutout win for the green and gold as Broncos continue to trail Estevan in standings

The Humboldt Broncos can add another shutout win to their record following a 6-0 win over Melville last night at the Elgar Petersen Arena (EPA)

This is the last time the two teams will meet in the regular season and Broncos forward Braiden Koran told northeastNOW Melville had given them a run for their money this past season with two Bronco losses earlier this year, including a rare loss at the EPA.

“Nice to finally licken’ those guys. They’ve had our number all year so it’s nice to beat them big like we did tonight,” Koran said.

With the 10th place Millionaires still making a run for that last playoff spot, Koran said they will need to keep an eye on those seventh to 10th place teams as playoffs loom.

“We’re obviously got to be ready for any of those four teams that are now in the 7, 8, 9, 10 seats, you know, we can play any of them so we got to be ready for all of them.”

Even with a Bruins’ loss in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves, the Broncos are still a win behind Estevan with 82 points this season for first in the Global Ag Risk Solutions division and second in the league.

Successful passing was the name of the game as some great assists lead to some great goals at the EPA.

Taking a great pass in front of the net from Alec Saretzky in the corner, forward Alex Morozoff kicked off the scoring for the Broncos midway through the first. This was followed a few minutes later by a pass from Koran behind the Millionaire net connecting with Cage Newans for goal number two on the power play making it 2-0 heading into the second.

Koran tapped one in himself in the second for a power play goal of his own thanks to a shot from Cody Hough from the blueline and some quick stick action in front of the net.

A backdoor pass from Newans to Connor McGrath would make it 4-0 as the seconds ticked on in the second making it three for three on the power play for the Broncos.

Going into the third, Saretzky once again with the pass to Noah Barlage for goal number five. Barlage from the Humboldt zone would return the favour to Morozoff as he goes in alone to beat out Millionaires’ goalie Ty Shumanski for goal number six in the dying minutes of the game.

The Broncos own goalie, Rayce Ramsay, picked up his 38th win and fifth shutout for the season. Flin Flon’s Cal Schell and Estevan’s Boston Bilous currently lead the league with six each.

Only four games remain for the Bronocs, including their remaining home game against the Kindersley Klippers on March 2. They will be hitting the road to face the Battlefords North Stars on Feb. 26, the Notre Dame Hounds on March 6, and a rescheduled Klippers match up on March 11 to finish off the regular season.

For hometown Bronco Noah Barlage, the crowds, especially the 1,600 strong crowd at the community Family Day game, are awesome to see. They will need to treat their remaining road games the same way, he told northeastNOW.

With a current two game winning streak and eight wins in the last 10 games, Barlage said they will have to keep up that momentum as they try to keep pace and overcome Estevan.

Barlage just hopes everyone is healthy as they are all excited for the upcoming playoff run.
