Hawks playoff chances over after loss to Terriers

Feb 28, 2022 | 10:04 AM

The Nipawin Hawks put the Yorkton Terriers on the powerplay nine times Sunday leading to a 6-4 loss in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) matchup.

In the final meeting of the season between the two clubs, Yorkton took a 3-0 lead in the first period and never looked back handing Nipawin their third straight loss. Hawks forward Braxton Buckberger said after the game that the team’s lack of discipline was instrumental in the result.

“We were in the box quite a bit and it’s hard to win a game when you are shorthanded so much. Way too many penalties, we need to be more disciplined,” he said.

Down three goals in the first period the Hawks did try to claw back into the game. Ranon Joseph scored his first career SJHL goal cutting the lead to 3-1.

Yorkton expanded the lead to 4-1 in the second period, but again Nipawin closed the gap courtesy Zander Stewart’s second career goal. Before the second period buzzer sounded, the Terriers added another to restore a three-goal cushion.

Nipawin’s Jake Smith added his fifth goal in the third period, Buckberger notched his eighth goal, but Yorkton’s Kishaun Gervais completed a hat trick to lead the Terriers to the win. Buckberger added an assist in the game and was named the third star. The 18-year-old rookie forward said it was nice to reach the scoresheet with a couple points.

“I thought I had a decent game,” he admitted. “I played pretty physical and got a couple nice bounces in the third that got me into a couple of the goals.”

Unfortunately for the Hawks they were officially eliminated from the SJHL playoff race. The team now has four games left with two being at home and two on the road. Tuesday Nipawin will conclude their season series with Flin Flon at the Centennial Arena. The Hawks will meet Melfort in a home-and-home series on the weekend before capping the season on March 8 in North Battleford. Buckberger said the team still has plenty of pride and will try to go out on a high note.

“We’re going to try and go 4-0 here and give it our all in every game and see what we can do. It would be nice to get four wins, go into the summer on a positive note and build for next year,” he said.

Tuesday’s game is a 7:30 p.m. start.
