Feisty affair in La Ronge sees Mustangs earn fourth straight win

Mar 3, 2022 | 11:07 AM

After 130 penalty minutes that included three fights, and two other game misconducts, the Melfort Mustangs defeated the La Ronge Ice Wolves by a 4-1 score in the final regular season meeting between the two rivals.

The Mustangs gave up the first goal of the contest just under four minutes in to Kole Christensson, but would respond with four unanswered to win the match.

“It was just a good character win tonight,” said Mustangs Assistant Coach Dan Meyers. “I thought we had some calls that weren’t right through the whole game, we did a lot of killing. But we killed the penalties off and we kept working hard.”

Melfort didn’t see their first powerplay of the game until less than a minute remained in the second period, and by that point, La Ronge had already amassed five powerplays, including a five minute man advantage. The Mustangs had also lost Curtis Hammond and Mark Snarr to game misconducts for their hits by that point.

Meyers said when the calls weren’t going their way, the fourth ranked penalty kill in the SJHL went to work and did their thing.

“We do have a good penalty kill,” he said. “So, when the boys are working hard, and it showed out there tonight, we killed every penalty off.”

Dawson Leroux, and Leyton Holoien scored for Melfort in the first period while Carter Anderson and former Ice Wolve Nolan Doell scored in the third to seal the deal for the Mustangs who now sit with a record of 30-15-4-5. That’s good for 69 points and a tie with Flin Flon for the best record in the Sherwood Division.

Melfort is back at it on Friday when they visit the Nipawin Hawks for the start of a home and home set.
