Melfort is gearing up for an unforgettable Canada Day.

The City of Melfort announced at the council meeting on March 14 they are bringing Gord Bamford to the community to help celebrate the country’s birthday.

Brian Enge, Community Services councillor told northeastNOW the event will be held at a Northern Lights Palace.

“There was a huge turnout for last year’s outdoor music event, which on that site is not going to happen this year because of construction.”

Although details are still being finalized, the concert is set to bring people out to enjoy an event after dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic for the past two years.

“I do feel this tests the waters of people’s excitement to get out or willingness to come out in large groups as well,” Enge explained. “People do want to get out and experience some of what we call normal life in a way”

To make this concert a success, they are looking for 20 to 30 volunteers to help run the bar, scan tickets and provide security.

Enge encourages local groups hoping to raise money for their organization to come forward and submit their names as possible candidates.

“We’d like to kind of construct a list of all the volunteer groups around the community so that way, it can be nice and fair.”

Once details are finalized, tickets will be available on the City of Melfort website.

For those not attending the concert, regular Canada Day events such as fireworks and family activities will still be taking place.

Enge said he is excited for a summer where people can get back into their normal routines.

“I’m looking forward to a summer of events and getting out with people. We all have had two years of isolation, regulations and rules. This summer is gonna be a feeling of excitement.”
