Mustangs fall in double overtime, series tied 1-1

Mar 20, 2022 | 9:20 AM

The Melfort Mustangs did come back from 3-1 down to force overtime, but couldn’t get the game-winning goal as the Yorkton Terriers tied the quarter-final series at one game apiece with a 4-3 double-overtime win.

The game opened at 1-1 just a few minutes in as Cade Kennedy scored for Yorkton and Boston Maxwell scored for Melfort. However, the Terriers would add two more from Zach McIntyre and Karsten Kruska to pull ahead 3-1.

Mustang forward Marco Lopez scored late in the first and late in the second period to tie things up. He said while there’s some solace in battling back the way they did, they need to play a full 60 minutes.

“I think we’ve got a lot more and we’re going to be looking to the next game,” he said. “We’re going to learn from this one and go on to the next one pushing even harder.”

The third period saw both teams battle, but nobody could get one to go. The same could be said through the first overtime as well as both goalies made tremendous saves. Joel Favreau stopped 54 of 58 overall for Melfort, while Yorkton got 45 saves from Kael DePape.

Kishaun Gervais would ultimately score the overtime winner on a bouncing puck that got by Favreau.

Lopez said now’s the first piece of playoff adversity for the group.

“We knew we were going to have some bad periods here and there,” Lopez said. “We knew that the time was going to come where we have to battle through some adversity and we’re going to do that.”

The best-of-seven series continues in Yorkton on Tuesday and Wednesday.
