Brad Johner and Johner Boys to perform for Wilkie fundraiser

The Wilkie & District Culture, Parks and Recreation Board are holding a special fundraising concert, featuring Brad Johner and The Johner Boys, in support of a new Wilkie swimming pool.

Taking place at Wilkie SaskCan Community Arena Sat., June 11, doors will open at 6 p.m. with happy hour until 7 p.m. and concert to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation director Lori Fenrich said proceeds will then go towards funding for a new swimming pool in the community to replace the current outdoor pool, something they are working hard towards.

“We have been fundraising for it for the last couple of years already, as our pool is at the end of its life,” she said. “It’s quite old, the cement is crumbling and the building needs to be replaced – everything needs to be replaced – so it’s no longer about doing repairs, we need a whole new facility. So hopefully we can pack the area and have a fun evening.”

In addition to the musical entertainment, there will also be a cash bar, with cabaret to follow.

Fenrich called it ‘a fun night out for all.’

“It is a family event, and that’s why we’re starting so early at 7:30, so people can bring the whole family out and enjoy it,” she said.

The estimated cost of a new community pool is projected by the Parks and Rec Board to be upwards of $2 million, making events like June’s concert a valuable way to bring an enjoyable event to the community while also raising funds towards the goal. The pool plays a valuable part of the social fabric of the community.

“When school’s out and kids are on break, the swimming pool is where the fun is,” Fenrich said. “And when the arena’s shut down after the winter, the swimming pool’s the place to be.”

Tickets for Brad Johner and the Johner Boys are $25, and are available at the Wilkie Town Office, or by calling (306) 843-2692.
