Broncos bamboozle Bombers in mindblowing OT win, semi-finals ongoing as Humboldt stays alive

Apr 10, 2022 | 9:27 AM

Broncos rebounded in a big way Saturday at the Whitney Forum in Flin Flon as they beat the Bombers in 3-2 in overtime to stay alive in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League semi-finals.

With the series now at 3-1 in favour of Flin Flon, the Broncos are returning to Humboldt for game five on Tuesday at the Elgar Petersen Arena. Even with the energizing win, the Broncos will still need to keep on winning to stay in final-round contention, including another win on the road as they head back to the Whitney on Friday.

Humboldt got on the board first as a slap shot on Flin Flon goalie Cal Schell from Kade Olsen was deflected in by forward Lucas Ceccarelli.

That would be all she wrote for the first as Jerzy Orchard converted a roving puck at the goal line into a pass to Matthew Perkins in front for the tap-in around Schell making it 2-0 for the Broncos.

But the Bombers would start answering back with a goal from Drew Kuzma coming a few minutes later. Xavier LaPointe would tie it up for Flin Flon in the dying seconds of the third with a beautiful shot finding its way around Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay. With the Bombers alive and fighting back against a Bronco win, both teams would head into overtime minutes.

And it would be loud with a full Whitney cheering on the Bombers but the Broncos would battle back with some impressive stick work from Olsen taking the puck away and around a couple of Bombers for a clear shot on Schell for the unassisted goal and the OT winner.

Both teams were consistent in their shots on goal with Broncos goalie Rayce Ramsay stopping 32 out of 34 shots from the Bombers while the Broncos fired 31 shots on Schell in the win.

Flin Flon will now be making the arduous drive down to Humboldt with puck drop at 7:30 at the Elgar Petersen Arena for Tuesday’s game.
