Meadow Lake Council amends bylaw, waiting for arena update

Meadow Lake City Council officially amended the Traffic Bylaw to address parking in the industrial area.

Mayor Merlin Seymour said they had brief discussions since bringing the amendment forward two weeks ago, adding that it’s a straightforward issue on having roads there that aren’t meant for parking.

“It’s a safety issue and then if large equipment runs into something, everything is backed up,” he said.

The city did receive one letter requesting that enforcement be delayed to give a business there some time to move fencing around their property. Seymour said they will accommodate that request.

“Plus, the current traffic bylaw does allow for a loading and unloading time, which won’t be affected at all,” he said.

Tax enforcement begins

The city will begin addressing properties in arrears on Nov. 15 and has put forward the list of lands. This will provide residents approximately six months to complete payments before action must be taken.

Seymour added that if they have to deal with a property at that time, there’s a lengthy process afterwards, rather than progressing right towards taking the title of a property.

“This is just an early step to ensure taxes are paid to the city,” he said.

Snow removal continues

Public Works are continuing to monitor water levels throughout Meadow Lake, with plenty of snow still melting. Seymour said that process is going smoothly so far.

Definitely there’s been issues of water [pooling] but nothing critical at this point,” he said.

Crews have addressed a few areas where water pooling threatened to become an issue. Seymour said as soon as they have the go ahead, work on infrastructure projects will get underway.

“The way the melt has gone so far, hopefully it keeps up like this.”

Still waiting

The biggest project for the community, likely the biggest in years, remains replacing the arena. Unfortunately, Seymour said the city can’t move forward until the insurance assessment of the previous building is complete and an update is provided from the federal and provincial governments. Meadow Lake has applied for funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), hoping an infrastructure grant will help to build a project larger than one arena.

“Just playing the waiting game,” Seymour said. “It’s all in the insurance people’s hands at the moment, they have to make sure everything is in order before things are finalized.”
