Broncos celebrate their own and say goodbye at awards banquet

The Humboldt Broncos honoured their own this weekend as they wrapped up the season with their annual awards banquet.

Many thank yous were given out as the Bronco board, coaches, and players thanked everyone for a great season, from the sponsors to the billets for all their support this season.

During his captain’s remarks, Kade Olsen said it was not the ending they wanted for the season but he still ended his final junior hockey league season with 24 new brothers.

“Barney and I had a phone call before the season and we talked about what our focuses should be this year. We came up with the word family and I personally think this is probably the closest group of guys I’ve seen in my four years as a Humboldt Bronco.”

Olsen also thanked the coaching staff for putting up with the players and being there for them.

“I find it reassuring to know that I can always come to the rink or call anyone to you guys about anything. You guys have always supported us and no matter what, on or off the ice, we love having you guys by your sides.”

Over 20 awards were given out with head coach Scott Barney and the rest of the coaching staff making some tough decisions this year.

“There’s multiple guys who could win every award, it’s just never easy but we try to move it around from player to player and get as many guys involved as you can.”

Many “great individual performances and accomplishments” went into their 45 wins and 13 losses during the regular season, said Barney during his coaches remarks. Some of these included Rayce Ramsay’s performance in net breaking a league record for regular season wins, Ethan Zielke’s most shorthanded points in the league, Connor Casparie’s most penalty minutes of the league, Connor McGrath being the top scorer of the league for his rookie season, and the unwavering leadership of Kade Olsen in his last season with the green and gold.

It takes a village to raise good hockey players and looking out over all the players at the banquet, Barney tearfully said he is one proud village.

“As we did all season, we showed resiliency and no quit attitude right to the end. This is a tribute to the leadership group we have, especially all our captains.”

The Broncos also said goodbye to eight of their own green and gold, many of whom are moving on to post-secondary careers.
