Weapons and drugs bust results in jail sentence

Apr 26, 2022 | 12:52 PM

One of two men charged after a drugs and weapons seizure in Prince Albert last year, had a severe meth addiction, and was simply associated with the wrong people according to his lawyer.

Kent Misponas, 26, has received a 10 month jail sentence after entering guilty pleas to two gun related charges. The case was heard Tuesday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

On the afternoon of Jan. 8, 2021, members of the Prince Albert Police Street Enforcement Team (SET) and the Integrated Crime Reduction Team (ICRT) went to a residence in the 400 block of Seventh St. E.

In their search, officers seized body armour, a rifle, a shotgun, several rounds of ammunition, a starter pistol, and varying amounts of illicit drugs, including crack cocaine and meth.

Misponas’s lawyer Dale Blenner-Hassett explained Misponas had no previous drug crimes, and was in no means the mastermind or organizer of the operation.

“He’s not a drug trafficking guy,” he said.

Going on to explain how Misponas had become “swept along” with the actions of the people he was associating with, and had made “errors in decisions”, Blenner-Hassett said Misponas has shown remorse and a desire to move back north to be with his family.

When given the opportunity to speak in court, Misponas said he had learned from his mistakes and was committed to changing his lifestyle.

In total, Misponas received 11 months jail, after entering pleas to other charges related to breaches of court conditions. With credit for time spent in remand, he has 43 days remaining. Upon his release from custody, he must also abide by a 10 year firearms prohibition.

The co-accused, Justin Charles, is scheduled to be in court on Friday.
