The province’s only correctional centre for women opened a new 30-cell unit on Wednesday.

The Pine Grove Correctional Centre’s new living unit will be able to accommodate up to 60 beds. The two-year project cost $13.4 million to complete.

“This new unit will help promote safety by adding new beds, incorporating a more modern design and adding new infrastructure to our correctional system,” corrections and policing minister Christine Tell said in a statement.

The living unit has three pods with 10 cells each, and is designed for supervision, and an interview room.
