Band members attempt to prevent advanced polling

The Sturgeon Lake First Nation continued its struggle for a legitimate election as dissenting band members attempted to upset the process.

Early Thursday afternoon at the Prince Albert Inn, a group including interim Chief Anita Parenteau allegedly tried to take away the ballot box.

Prince Albert Police were called and able to calm the situation. No charges have been laid.

Two conflicting groups have been at odds over the selection of the First Nation’s chief and council.

Henry Felix Sr. was named Chief last Friday, ahead of the actual general election March 18. The group opposed to his acclamation said not only was the chief electoral officer suspended, but the election itself is a sham.
