Harvest wraps up

Harvest is winding down across Saskatchewan.

Almost the entire 2010 crop is in the bin according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report.
Ninety-nine per cent is combined province wide which is well ahead of last year’s pace when 79 per cent of the crop had been harvested.

“It’s in spite of the challenging situation and where we were a month ago. I think producers are certainly glad to see the end of this harvesting season,” said Grant McLean, a crop specialist with the province.

Farmers in the north east planted fewer acres this year because of washed out fields, from too much rain.

“With a lower number of acres that were actually left to harvest — they’ve pretty well wrapped up,” he said.

Farm work mostly came to a stand-still as rain and snow rolled across the province this week.
McLean said there will be likely be some harvesting in November.

“Once the ground gets frozen they may be able to do some salvage operations on (fields),” said McLean.

Decent yields have been reported across the province, but the quality has suffered because of a wet September and early frost.

“Grades certainly are lower than we would … expect in a normal harvest,” said McLean.

The province will issue a year-end crop report next week.
