Winter Games seeking volunteers

Battlefords area residents who want to show their support to the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games now have a chance to sign up as a volunteer.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games committee and supporters came together at the Civic Centre in North Battleford Thursday to launch the volunteer drive.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater and Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie were the first to officially register to volunteer at the launch.

“It’s a great opportunity for citizens to get involved,” Bater said. “We need 1,200 people, so that’s an army of volunteers.

“This is the biggest event the community has seen in decades and likely will see for quite some time. If there are people who want to get involved, there are lots of opportunities to do that.”

Co-chair on the Games Volunteer committee, Mark Richardson said volunteering at the Games will be a good opportunity for people to show their support.

The registration system will collect each volunteer’s name and what area he or she would like to be involved in. The city is offering free criminal record checks.

“We’re asking people to do as much as they can,” Richardson said.

There are a variety of volunteer positions available from scorekeeping to kitchen work, security or arranging beds at the athlete’s village.

Organizers are planning a volunteer orientation, as well as training and registration nights closer to the start of the Games.

The Winter Games runs from Feb. 18 to 24 in the Battlefords area.
