The City of North Battleford saved more than $50,000 after renewing its residential recycling collection program.

By signing up with Loraas Environmental Services, the firm offered a lower rate to North Battleford for its recycling collection.

“It’s great, it’s always good to be able to negotiate and find savings throughout the year,” city manager Jim Puffalt said. “We try and do that all the time. Lots of times we can’t, but this was a good opportunity. We’re glad we’re able to partner with Loraas to make that happen.”

The city’s current rate for recycling is $2.91 per cart per month for collection, as well as $87 per metric tonne for processing the recycling material. It’s estimated the city has about 4,973 blue household recycling carts. Loraas said if the city extends the recycling contract to 2019 and signs on for garbage collection as well, the recycling rate could reduce to $2.04 per cart per month starting Nov. 1.
