Todd Lewis, the President of the Agricultural Producers of Saskatchewan, pressed federal lawmakers this week to pass Bill C-49, the Transportation Act.

Lewis appeared Wednesday at a special Senate standing committee on transport and communications. During his presentation, Lewis described the current difficulties that agricultural producers are facing when moving their products to market.

“Producers are heavily reliant on Canada’s railways,” Lewis said, noting  Saskatchewan grain sometimes has to travel a distance of 1,900 km to reach a port.

Lewis also called for additional legislation to address producers’ shipping challenges in the long term, beyond what is included in Bill C-49.
