Local Broncos fundraiser exceeds expectations

A local fundraiser for the Humboldt Broncos hockey team has raised over $8,200.

On Friday, Dairy Queen donated all proceeds from Blizzard sales towards the team. Sixteen members of the Broncos organization were killed when the team’s bus collided with a semi-trailer April 6, and store owner Trent Kachur said he was emotionally moved by all the fundraising efforts and support that poured in for the families of the injured and deceased since the tragic crash.

“We sat at home one night, my wife and I, and we were like ‘you know, we’ve got to do something,’” he said.

With very little advertising, a few days planning and the help of the local radio station, Kachur said he and his wife made the decision to just collect as much money as they could. The public responded, and over the course of the day, the restaurant sold 1,665 blizzards.
