Members of the Battle River Treaty Six Health Centre rode the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Big Bike Friday to raise both awareness and funds for the programs and services the agency provides across Canada.

Organizer Sandra Favel Rewarts said the local health centre’s members know the effects heart disease and stroke can have on communities.

“We wanted to get involved in the Big Bike not only because it’s a lot of fun but because we know there is a lot of chronic diseases like these in our areas with the clients we serve,” Favel Rewarts said.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation released a report this month which said 450,000 Canadians will suffer a stroke this year.

“Those numbers are staggering,” Favel Rewarts said. “Awareness has to be made that heart disease and stoke have serious consequences and if we can help by raising a little bit of money then we are happy to do so.”

The Battle River Treaty Six Health Centre raised a total of $3,000 for the organization and took the 29-seat Big Bike for a 30-minute ride through the streets of North Battleford.

“We had a great group raising funds for the Big Bike ride,” she added. “I think $3,000 is great.”

Members of the Discovery Co-op also raised $1,800 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
