Action Battlefords receives boost from Anderson Pump House donation

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce’s Action Battlefords campaign is once again receiving more support from the community.

Anderson Pump House Ltd. of North Battleford donated $5,000 to the project, aimed at reducing crime and improving the community’s reputation. 

Rod Forman, Anderson Pump House (APH) vice-president, said he and APH president Howard Kirby discussed the importance of the Action Battlefords cause.

“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” he said. “The Battlefords, from the point of view of someone moving from Vancouver, is a fantastic place to live, despite what a statistic may say about the crime level here. I believe this is a great community to live in and to raise my family in.” 

Forman said the $5,000 donation will help promote the Battlefords as “a great place to live.”

Battlefords Chamber of Commerce president Terry Caldwell said the donation will be earmarked to help fund a youth initiative for this summer, a “top priority.”

“We’re overjoyed,” Caldwell said. “It’s donations like this from community leaders that really bring everybody together and are held up as an example for the rest of the community. We’re really eternally grateful for it. It’s going to be put to good use.”

Caldwell said Action Battlefords and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Battlefords will be working together to hire an individual to focus on coordinating Action Battlefords events for youth in the community, to help youth at risk.

He said there are 38 various youth programs in North Battleford right now. The new coordinator would invite the organizers of these programs to participate in Action Battlefords events for youth also so everyone benefits as a result.

The youth coordinator would report to both Action Battlefords as well as to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Battlefords to create events for youth.

“We need to keep those kids busy, and we need to show them that there’s a community out there of other kids that they need to meet … to build community,” said Caldwell. “Right now they are almost segregated in a lot of ways, not just by age.”

Caldwell said prior donations Action Battlefords has received have helped the local Citizens on Patrol grow.
