Roadworks on Second Ave. nearly wrapped up

The major water main replacement job on one of Prince Albert’s busiest streets is nearing completion.

The extensive project at the intersections of 28th St. and 27th St. involves taking out 66-year-old cast iron pipes and replacing them with PVC as part of the city’s ongoing water mains upgrade.

“It was a location where we’ve had a number of water main breaks in recent history, so that became a priority,” Capital Projects Manager Nykol Miller told paNOW.

While the project is all about the new water main, Miller added there were many elements underground that needed to be addressed.

“There are hydrant replacements, installation of valves, new service connections, and new cross-members to allow for the lateral joining of the pipes from the side streets, so it’s intricate,” she said.

Passing motorists may have noticed crews putting concrete down on Second and 28th this week.

“We’ve put down 10 inches of concrete at that intersection because it’s a high-traffic one,” Miller said. “The concrete is able to withstand the heavy vehicle weight and so the rutting from tires doesn’t happen.”

A similar approach has already been done on other key intersections around the city.

Miller said the project is expected to wrap up early next week.
