The City of North Battleford’s Mayor Ryan Bater joined Pride Week organizers to officially proclaim this Pride Week in the Battlefords.

“I want to commend all the volunteers and the organizers in this week-long celebration,” Bater said during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony outside City Hall. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen a week-long celebration. So it’s great to see.”

Bater said the city as well as the Town of Battleford are recognizing Pride Week.

“It’s really important for us as a community to recognize equality of all people, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation,” Bater said. “All people should feel safe and comfortable in their own skin. Love is love.”

Bobbisue Thompson on the Pride Week organizing committee said she is excited to see the start of the second annual Pride Week.

“It’s the recognition of the LGBT plus community,” she said. “It’s very important because we haven’t had recognition in the smaller communities.”

“It’ll show the people in the community that they are not alone,” Thompson added. “There are a lot of LGBT people here. I’m sure many of them feel like they are alone, and they don’t know anybody else in the community. So we’re trying to let them know they have the community … and give them that sense of belonging.”

Pride Week includes a number of activities in the Battlefords, as well as the Pride Week walk on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. at Central Park in North Battleford. Other events include a free midnight movie screening of Love, Simon at the Capital Theatre Friday. Pride Fest celebrations will take place downtown in N.B. all-day Saturday, with live music beginning at 6 p.m. Then, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. some guest speakers will give presentations at the N.B. Library, discussing the Two Spirit community and other topics for Pride Week.

Thompson said many volunteers have come together to organize the Pride Week events. She encourages all supporters to celebrate Pride Week in the Battlefords also.
