Youth charged with assault during court proceeding in M.L.

Things were out of order in Meadow Lake court earlier this week.

On Monday, Aug. 20, an alleged assault look place during the routine Monday court sitting. A young suspect who was not in custody at the time, was in court to answer to charges.

Family of the alleged victim relating to the person’s charges were also present in court watching the proceedings against the youth.

In a media release, Cpl. Rielly Knock of the Meadow Lake RCMP said once the appearance was dealt with, the youth returned to sit in the gallery.   

“Court had moved on to other matters, when a family member of the victim approached and allegedly assaulted the accused by slapping the youth in the head,” he said.

The accused slapper and the suspect in the case cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The alleged slapper is facing charges for assault, uttering threats and contempt of court. This person will appear in court on Aug. 22 in Île-à-la-Crosse.
