New UPS Store offers services ‘beyond shipping’

Shipping and receiving just got a little easier in Prince Albert. A ribbon cutting took place Tuesday to mark the opening of a new UPS Store.

“It brings a lot more than just delivery and packages. It brings printing services, a variety of different canvas prints, posters and banners, mailboxes, packing supplies and more,” owner Bill Chow said.

When the province shut down Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) as part of its budget cuts last year, it also meant the end of STC delivery routes. Chow said he recognized there would be a need for shipping and receiving services.

“We don’t do the delivery of parcels within the city, but we do take and receive and make sure the parcels move on to different places,” Chow said.

He added the UPS Store may be especially handy for people living in rural areas who don’t have the ability to receive packages.

While Chow is happy to help build the economy by opening a local business, he acknowledges the nature of his store contributes to online shopping which takes business away from local retailers.

“It’s a catch-22. I believe in supporting the local economy and that’s why we opened a business in Prince Albert. But on the other side of it…we can’t stop people from online shopping. So, if they have that need and desire, obviously there is a void there and we are trying to fill that void…especially for people who live outside the city,” Chow said.

The UPS Store is located at 599 – 28th St. W.
