Local groups go nutty for food bank

The Prince Albert Food Bank will be able to feed more hungry families thanks to a peanut butter donation this week.

Approximately 500 jars of peanut butter were donated to the local food bank Tuesday. Kerry Ramsdell with the Prince Albert Food Bank, said the donation will be a great addition to food hampers for hungry families.

“Peanut butter is a good staple because it’s actually a protein,” Ramsdell said. “So, if you don’t have meat, then at least you can have peanut butter.”

A number of local unions and labour organizations got together to collect peanut butter for the food bank. Ward 1 City Councillor Charlene Miller spearheaded the fundraising and said it’s important for young people to have access to healthy foods.

“Kids do participate in going to the food bank and I think every year, it’s important they have something nutritious,” Miller told paNOW.

A number of local organizations participated in the fundraiser, including CUPE Locals 5430 and 882, the Prince Albert Labour Council, SGEU, the local firefighters charity, Lake Country Co-op and RWDSW. This is the third year the group has collected peanut butter for the food bank.

Ramsdell said the food bank can always use more donations for needy families in Prince Albert, especially as colder weather and Christmas approaches.
