A new case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been discovered near Melfort.

The Ministry of Environment said Wednesday that a three-and-a-half year-old elk bull in zone 42E, south of Melfort, was submitted as part of the voluntary CWD surveillance program.

CWD affects the nervous system of members of the deer family, including deer, elk, moose, and caribou.

The province said there have been 34 cases of the disease in Saskatchewan in 2018.
